a film by Marco Bellocchio

From one of Italy’s most revered directors, Kidnapped is the true story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy living in Bologna, Italy, who in 1858, after being secretly baptized, was forcibly taken from his family by the Pope, to be raised as a Christian. His parents’ struggle to free their son became part of a larger political battle that pitted the papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.

“I thrilled to this movie… a gripping, heartbreaking true-political crime story from the pages of history. It is a full-tilt melodrama with the passionate vehemence of Victor Hugo or Charles Dickens.”
–Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
