The Calamitous Lies of Adulthood
In Elena Ferrante’s The Lying Life of Adults , the narrator—an adolescent girl named Giovanna—begins her story by recounting the time she heard her father tell her mother “that I was very ugly.”
“My need to work on monologues originates from my love of literature. I usually pick novels that have little or no dialogue, so that I perceive the book as a very long monologue. Since I make films where plot twists are rare, if not entirely absent, monologues help me to have something masquerade as a plot twist that is just not there,” says Paolo Sorrentino
Italian twins Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo, who made a splash in Berlin last year with “Bad Tales,” are back on set with dark thriller “America Latina” toplining Elio Germano , who was at Berlin 2020 with two pics: “Bad Tales” and “Hidden Away,” for which he scored a Silver Bear.

Italian star Luca Marinelli ( The Old Guard , Eight Mountains , Martin Eden ) has signed on to play Benito Mussolini in M. Son of the Century , the new eight-part series from Atonement director Joe Wright , which traces the fascist leader’s rise to power in Italy in the early 20th century. The series, commissioned as a Sky Original, is based on Antonio Scurati’s best-selling novel.
The Trieste Film Festival puts Central-Eastern European cinema on the map
The 34th edition of the leading Italian showcase for Central-Eastern European films is unspooling from 21-28 January
Netflix’s founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings opened the streaming platform’s Rome office today and unveiled a slate of Italian films and series, including a series adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s most recent novel ’The Lying Life Of Adults’ that will star Valeria Golino. Fandango is producing and Edoardo De Angelis will direct.
Paolo Genovese’s The First Day Of My Life, starring Toni Servillo, and now in post-production, has sold widely for Italian sales outfit True Colours, following the European Film Market. The film has been acquired for Benelux (Paradiso Entertainment), Taiwan (Swallow Wings), Israel (Nachshon), former Yugoslavia (Stars Media), Finland (Future Films) and Portugal (Outsider Pictures).
