Maura Delpero’s Venice Silver Lion Winner ‘Vermiglio’ Is Italy’s Oscar Candidate

recently won the Venice Film Festival’s Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize, has been designated as Italy’s candidate for the best international feature film category of the 2025 Academy Awards.
The drama, which is set at the end of World War II in an Alpine village where the arrival of a soldier causes disruption in the dynamics between three sisters, had its North American premiere after Venice in the special presentations section at Toronto.

The Oscars international feature film race got another strong competitor on Tuesday when Italy announced it would submit “Vermiglio” as its entry for the 97th Academy Awards. Written and directed by Maura Delpero, the film won the Silver Lion in Venice earlier this month. Delpero’s drama is set in 1944 in the titular alpine village.
