VERMIGLIO looks at a 20th century village coming to terms with women’s autonomy

A small mountain village called Vermiglio is far enough from World War II to not feel its effects, but war eventually is carried back to the village. Quite literally, as Pietro (Giueseppe De Domenico), a Sicilian, carries an injured Attilio all the way back home to Vermiglio to help save his life. Pietro’s arrival spurns changes and peels back the many layers of a village that is stuck in time. War, misogyny, and prejudice are all shackles that determine the fate of the people in this village. The film examines one of the bigger families in the village, but specifically three girls in this family that all are trying to find their own fortune in a world full of small, narrow chances.

VERMIGLIO: Maura Delpero’s Final Study of a Remote Italian Alpine Village at the End of World War II

VERMIGLIO: Maura Delpero’s Final Study of a Remote Italian Alpine Village at the End of World War II

Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 11/4/24 – On Sunday, October 26, at the AFI FEST 2024 was a screening of Vermiglio – a 2024 Italian drama film written and directed by Maura Delpero. The story takes place in 1944, in Vermiglio, a remote mountain village in Italy up in the Dolomites. Maura Delpero’s new film was a richly deserving winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Venice film festival this year and it has been designated as the Italian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. It is a richly compassionate, emotional and detailed drama of family secrets in the wartime Italian countryside, in the manner of Ermanno Olmi or the Taviani brothers. It is wonderfully acted with unaffected naturalism by its cast of professionals and newcomers and plays on the audience’s heartstrings. This is Italian director Maura Delpero’s follow-up to her Maternal (2019).

AFI Review: Vermiglio Paints a Lyrical Portrait of Desires Constrained by Catholicism

Vermiglio is set in the eponymous alpine village during the waning days of WWII. Maura Delpero’s film, gorgeously shot by Leviathan cinematographer Mikhail Krichman, is a slow-moving fable that unfolds as a novelistic series of pastoral tableaus. The short chapters evoke Balzacian poetic realism and recall the sensual textures of last year’s The Taste of Things. But unlike that film, which exuded autumnal warmth and celebrated pleasure––therefore freedom––Vermiglio‘s stark, wintery beauty comes at the price of its characters’ desires. The painterly frames physically constrain subjects, especially women who suffer pointedly under the social restrictions of this time and place.
