VERMIGLIO: Maura Delpero’s Final Study of a Remote Italian Alpine Village at the End of World War II
Los Angeles, CA (The Hollywood Times) 11/4/24 – On Sunday, October 26, at the AFI FEST 2024 was a screening of Vermiglio – a 2024 Italian drama film written and directed by Maura Delpero. The story takes place in 1944, in Vermiglio, a remote mountain village in Italy up in the Dolomites. Maura Delpero’s new film was a richly deserving winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Venice film festival this year and it has been designated as the Italian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. It is a richly compassionate, emotional and detailed drama of family secrets in the wartime Italian countryside, in the manner of Ermanno Olmi or the Taviani brothers. It is wonderfully acted with unaffected naturalism by its cast of professionals and newcomers and plays on the audience’s heartstrings. This is Italian director Maura Delpero’s follow-up to her Maternal (2019).
